Robot Smut Book Cover
This is the first part of a 5 book series. This first book cover is for "Robot Smut" and is a collection of short, erotic stories that all focus around robotic sexual encounters.
The definition of 'Smut' is something which is obscene or indecent and also the cover obviously needed to tie in with sex and robots. My first ideas with this were to do something involving a sexy female robot doing something suggestive or a naked female robot with parts made up of electronics. However since this cover was to be submitted to the iTunes bookstore and the Kindle store my initial sketches were rejected by the client. (I'll be sure to recycle these designs in my weekly illustration section).
The other issue was the timing and so since there was very little time I was unable to come up with lots of ideas and explore them. We therefore looked at doing something simpler and less erotic to fit this timescale. The next idea I came up was using the USB logo as a hand. USB is an interface with computers with male and female connectors and so to me had a nice subtle sexual reference with an electronic spin.
Here are some initial sketches:
The 2 directions I took was to have a finger pointing using the USB interface symbol which is subtle but with some sexual undertones. The other idea was to have fingers which matched an obscene hand gesture which was a little more smutty yet still subtle:
